The 1990 exhibition Commitment took its title taken from German critic Theodor Adorno’s essay of the same name. The group show addressed the following questions: how does a contemporary artist attempt to produce an effective critical/cultural practice – a political practice – within a history of artists who have revealed the gallery/museum’s matrix of social, economic and political relations? How does an artist with a social and political conscience work within the very confined institutions of art?
This 44-page softcover catalogue features images of work by the exhibiting artists. Also included is an exhibition essay by curator Tom Folland.
