"In recent years, diversity has become a mainstay of artist production. One artist develops her work in several directions at the same time. This fact is not a complete novelty, but its recurrence deserves attention, especially in those instances in which—instead of mere ‘diversity’—the appropriate word to describe this multifaceted, multidirectional practice seems to be ‘heterogeneity,’ as is the case with Pedro Cabrita Reis." — José Miranda Justo, p. 75
This catalogue was produced in conjunction with the exhibition Pedro Cabrita Reis: fourteen paintings the preacher and a broken line, presented at The Power Plant from 20 September 2014 to 4 January 2015.
Pedro Cabrita Reis examines the connections between space, architecture, and material through work that blends sculpture, drawing, and painting. Often creating work in situ, and known for large-scale installations, he combines everyday or household objects such as chairs, tables, and doors, with industrially-produced materials. At The Power Plant, Cabrita Reis created a new site-specific installation of industrial fluorescent lights attached to large steel girders, aimed at activating the space of the gallery. The artist sees his work as halfway between drawing and installation, speaking to the relationship between architecture and materiality.
The publication features texts by José Miranda Justo, and a conversation between Pedro Cabrita Reis and Gaëtane Verna.
