“Throughout the exhibition Under the Influence of Psyche, Araújo transmits pre-defined notions of representation found in his historical references and then slowly works to tear them apart. In each project he negotiates and reconstitutes the unstable limits of human behaviour by addressing power structures that define Western traditions.“ — Julia Paoli, p. 69
The 4th in the Power Plant Pages series, this publication was produced in conjunction with the exhibition Vasco Araújo: Under the Influence of Psyche, presented at The Power Plant from 28 June to 1 September 2014.
Working across film, installation, sculpture, and sound, Vasco Araújo confronts Western traditions in opera, dance, theatre, and literature, in order to question both contemporary notions of representation and the writing and canonization of history. Introducing divergent readings of these traditions, the artist offers instead a body of work that suggests that history, rather than closed or finished narrative, has the ability to be renewed and reread.
The book includes texts by Gaëtane Verna, Julia Paoli, Marie de Brugerolle, and Chantal Pontbriand.
