Co-published with Hatje Cantz, this monograph was produced in conjunction with the exhibition Vivian Suter: La Canícula, presented at The Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery from October 20 to December 30 2018.
For more than thirty years, Swiss-Argentine artist Vivan Suter has worked in Panajachel, Guatemala, on the site of a former coffee plantation. Suter’s works are the direct result of her immediate landscape—made in a studio which opens to the rainforest, her paintings typically lie on the ground or drape over tree branches. Influenced by nature and chance, vibrant colours mix with dirt, leaves, and even insects, which find their way into her impressive large-scale paintings.
This publication features essays by Adam Szymczyk and Hendrik Folkerts, an interview between Vivian Suter and R.H. Quaytman, a foreword by The Power Plant Director Gaëtane Verna, extensive installation views of numerous exhibitions, as well as detailed images from Suter’s home studio. Also collected are a series of short written reflections by Alison Gingeras, Michael Hugentobler, Rosalind Nashashibi, Miriam Cahn, Moyra Davey, Feodora Pallas, Beat Keusch, Nabila Abdel Nabi, Martin Suter, Quinn Latimer, and Stefan Benchoam.
