French artist Abdelkader Benchamma’s gestural and densely layered murals, drawings, and installations of abstract tectonic movements and gravitational forces recall the dynamism of the universe. Drawing from an encyclopedic repertoire of interests, including natural philosophy, geology, astronomy, art history, and existential literature, his imagery questions our relationship to reality. To mark the exhibition Solastalgia: Archeaologies of Loss, Benchamma created a suite of ten unique serigraphs inspired by the aurora borealis—an enigmatic natural phenomenon of colourful lights illuminating the night sky. Known for his elegant draftsmanship, the artist overlays these prints with meticulous pencil, marker, or pen strokes that animate the cascading swirls and waves of the aurora borealis. With each individual piece, Benchamma developed a range of unique scenes. In some, icebergs or geological formations appear to rise from the horizon while, in others, celestial bodies and solar flares display the grandeur of the cosmos beyond our reach.
